The Enduring Legacy of the Herman Becker Family in Austin

1857 Present

Becker Texas Properties stands on a foundation laid by Herman Becker (1857-1933), whose commercial vision and philanthropic spirit helped shape the history of Austin. Our family's roots in property and business are deep, originating from the late 19th century.

Commercial Ventures and South Austin Property

Herman Becker's journey began with a successful downtown café, but his influence quickly grew in the city's commercial and real estate sectors. In 1891, he demonstrated foresight by acquiring a significant portion of the historic Bouldin homestead in South Austin. This land investment was crucial, as it formed the basis for future family business and community contributions.

The family's commercial interests expanded significantly with the Becker Lumber Company, which was co-managed by Herman's son, H.E. Becker, and son-in-law, P.A. Wilde. The Becker Lumber Company was an important part of the city's construction and development, operating prominently at the corner of First Street and Congress Avenue.

Enduring Philanthropic Gifts

The Becker family's commitment to Austin is permanently marked by two significant acts of philanthropy:

1

The O. Henry House Donation

Herman Becker was a steward of Austin's history. He owned the residence of famed author William Sydney Porter (O. Henry), and he generously donated the O. Henry House to the City of Austin for preservation. This ensures that the historic landmark remains a cultural treasure for all Austinites.

2

Becker Elementary School

Continuing the family's legacy, H.E. Becker and P.A. Wilde, through the Becker Lumber Company, donated three acres of the original Bouldin land to the Austin Independent School District (AISD) in 1935. This generous gift provided the site for what would become the first elementary school in South Austin, which was named Becker Elementary School in honor of Herman Becker.

Family Stewardship Continues

Today, the Becker family continues to operate Becker Texas Properties with the same principles established by Herman Becker over a century ago. This unbroken chain of family ownership ensures that every decision is made with long-term vision rather than short-term profit.

Why Family Ownership Matters to Our Tenants

Stability & Consistency

Unlike corporate-owned properties that change hands frequently, our family ownership provides decades of stable management. Your lease is with a family that has been here since the 1800s and isn't going anywhere.

Direct Relationships

When you lease from us, you work directly with the family owners, not layers of corporate management. Problems are solved quickly because decision-makers are accessible and personally invested in your success.

Property Pride

These aren't just investments to us—they're family assets we intend to pass to the next generation. We maintain our properties as if our name is on them, because it is. Your space is cared for with generational thinking.

Community Commitment

Our roots run deep in Austin. We're not distant investors; we're your neighbors. The success of your business directly impacts our community, and we have every incentive to see you thrive.
